Sunderland and North Durham Finswimmers
Finswimming Equipment
Monofins
The prime equipment used by
finswimmers is the 'Mono' or
monofin. These were developed
in the old "Eastbloc" that existed
before the fall of Communism,
principally, but not exclusively,
in the former Soviet Union.
The monofin consists of a single
blade of fiberglass or plastic to
which are attached rubber
footpockets.
This arrangement forces the
swimmer to perform a 'Dolphin'
kick-stroke, similar to the leg
stroke in classic-swimming 'fly
kick.
Stereofins
This photo shows one of a pair of
stereofins,
Some Finswimmers find them
easier to use than a Standard
Monofin, and a further variation
of them are widely used in
Competitive lifesaving
competitions.
The above  picture shows a
direct-feed SCUBA pony-bottle
used in submersion events,
typically of distances from 100 - 200
meters, and is approx. 1.7 litres in
capacity. Slightly larger ones are
used for races of 400, 800 and
1500m.
Snorkels (above)
This is a standard  Finwimmers
Snorkel. Some snorkels do not
have such a severe bend in the
tubing and allow a different head
posture when swimming. The
snorkel is held in place by a
headband which fits round the
front of the forehead and a rubber
strap  which fits round the back.
The snorkel can come in two or
three shapes, the one above is the
'classic' style.
Eye wear
Standard swimming
goggles are
normally used in
Finswimming,
although some
Competitors prefer a
mask as shown by
the example, above.
Swimwear (Above Right)
Standard Swim-briefs for  most men and one-piece swimsuits or
bodysuits for a few men and all women. My own personal preference is
for a one-piece suit.
One-piece suits can either be fabrics such as Speedo
'Fastskin','Aquablade' or standard Lycra/Polyamide.
Above  is a photo of a selection of  standard Lycra/polyamide and
Fastskin swimsuits being worn  by Competitors from the Netherlands at
a Lifesaving competition in Germany..
