The breathold-ing world of APNEA Finswimming
|
APNEA is the discipline of Swimming whilst holding Breath. It is a
discipline in itself and most, if not all, practitioners of DYNAMIC APNEA
use Monofins to perform the discipline. STATIC APNEA, as it's name
implies, is performed while stationary, so fins are not used. Finswimming
APNEA races in Great Britain are usually of 25 or 50m in length,
depending on the pool being used. Abroad, APNEA Events are almost
exclusively over 50m. A small number of Finswimmers concentrate
exclusively on APNEA events - in other words they do not race surface or
SCUBA(Immersion) events.
Technique:
Much has been said and written about Apnea technique, that it is just "a
gasp, a splash and a dash", but the bottom line is that it is all about
pacing ones-self within one's own limitations in the context of the event.
One school of thought says that Yoga or meditation excercises can
help when it comes to breath control - another maintains that simply
learning deep-breathing - possibly with the assistance of breath exercise
trainers on the market, is sufficient. Whichever way you choose to to
approach the discipline, it can be fun, exciting, and just a bit 'on the
edge', and give you a further dimension to the sport of Finswimming..for
my money the discipline is probably the most Elegant and Exciting of the
three in the sport.
