Sunderland and North Durham Finswimmers - about our Sport and Group
|
Finswimming
is swimming using a monofin - or in some cases stereofins - to
propel the swimmer through the water.
Disciplines in the sport.
There are three of these - Surface, Immersion and Apnea.
A centre-mount snorkel is used for surface races, a small (1ltr.)
pony-bottle for sub-surface (immersion) events, and no
breathing aid at all is used in breath-hold (APNEA) sprint races
of 25 or 50-metres distance.
In the UK the sport takes place exclusively indoors. The pools
used are standard-sized 25 -or 50-metre pools although the
latter are very rare in the UK.
The nearest 50-metre pool to the north-east of England is in
Leeds, although Sunderland City council, in co-operation with
Sunderland AFC , hope to site a complex, which will include a
50-metre pool, next to the Sunderland Stadium of Light -home
of the football club.
Equipment

equipment we use.
Our Group
began about 8 years ago on a informal basis. I had seen
finswimming at the World Games in Laahti, Finnland, on
Eurosport, and decided that I would like to 'try it'.
The bug bit, and although I am over 50 years old I enjoy the
sport and hold 2 British age-group records for Finswimming
events. See more information on the page entitled 'What our
Club Does'.
We are under the jurisdiction of the British Finswimming
Association, which is the Parent-body for the Sport in the UK. It
is also associated with BUSA -the British Underwater Sports
Association.
Some of our Swimmers occasionally visit and take part in, the
training sessions of other Finswimming clubs. (Link Left)
